West & Willow Alternatives, Compared

West & Willow is the best-known name in modern pet portraits, and the reason people look for an alternative is usually one of three things: they want to see the artwork before it prints without paying extra for the privilege, they want a wider range of styles, or they want a real painting rather than a print. This guide sets out the alternatives that answer each of those, including us, with every claim taken from the company's own published pages, and a genuine reason to choose each one.

Why people look for an alternative

West & Willow describes its portraits as "hand-illustrated by our talented digital artists" with no filters or apps, sold as prints, framed prints and a range of gifts. A one-pet portrait is $46 as an 8x10 print and $77 framed in black or white, with walnut and birch frames $11 more. The detail that sends people looking elsewhere is the proof: seeing the artwork before it prints is a $10 "Artwork Preview" add-on, and without it the first time you see the portrait is when it arrives. For a portrait of your own pet, that is a lot of trust to extend. The style range is a handful of named looks plus themed lines, all in the same modern illustrated register, so anyone who wants painterly, geometric or playful has to look further.

Togo & Stark

We make framed pet portraits in seven signature styles, from a minimal line drawing and a clean modern illustration to a painted portrait, a geometric one, a carved wood look, a 3D cartoon and six costumed personas. The artwork is created digitally in those styles, and a real person reviews every portrait before you see it. The part we will not compromise on is the proof: every order includes a free digital proof with unlimited revisions, and nothing prints until you approve it. An 8x10 is $28 as a digital file, $42 as a print and $77 framed in black, white, wood or dark wood, the same entry frame price as West & Willow with the preview included rather than added. Printing is museum-grade on archival paper, framed in real wood, in 8x10, 12x16 and 18x24 inches. Choose us if you want to see the portrait before it prints, want more than one modern look to choose from, and want the frame options included at the entry price. Our guide to the seven styles is the place to start.

Crown & Paw

The volume player, known for Renaissance and costume canvases. Their pages describe a process of "proprietary photo editing techniques, professional photo re-touching" and "brush strokes and blending" over your photo, and the catalogue is enormous, with canvases from $39.95 and dozens of themed characters. Every order includes a free preview with unlimited revisions, with one catch worth knowing: if you do not respond within three days of the preview, the artwork is treated as approved and printed. US shipping is a flat $9.95 and free over $100. Choose them if you want a costume or Renaissance theme at the lowest entry price and you will be quick with your preview reply.

PortraitFlip

A different product from the print brands: a physical painting, described as "hand-painted by professional artists" in oil, watercolor, charcoal and more, from $89 depending on size and medium. You receive a preview of the painting with unlimited revisions, pay 20% in advance and the rest only after approving it, and their pages state delivery within 14 days and free shipping worldwide, rolled or framed. Choose them if what you want is brushstrokes on canvas at a price closer to a print than to a commissioned painting, and you can wait the two weeks.

Paint Your Life

The other painting studio, positioned higher. Their portraits are "100% hand-painted" in oil, acrylic, watercolor, charcoal or pencil; you approve a mock-up and then the finished painting itself before it ships, and their published timelines run from roughly two weeks expedited to three or four weeks normally, at prices that start in the hundreds of dollars for a small canvas. Choose them if the portrait is a milestone gift and the painting itself, not the picture, is the point. Our comparison of the main pet portrait companies goes deeper on both painting studios.

Etsy and independent artists

There are thousands of independent pet portrait artists selling through their own sites and through Etsy, in every medium and at every price. The good ones are very good, and the variety is the point. Three things to check before ordering from any of them: whether you see a proof before anything is made, what the revision policy is, and whether the price includes printing and framing or only a digital file. Turnaround varies from days to months, so ask.

How to choose

Decide the proof question first, because it is the one thing you cannot undo. If seeing the artwork before it prints matters to you, that rules out ordering from West & Willow without the add-on, and it puts us, Crown & Paw and PortraitFlip in front. Then decide print or painting: a print is faster, cheaper and hangs in a modern room; a painting is an object with a different weight and a different price. Then decide the look. If the modern illustrated style is what drew you to West & Willow in the first place, our Modern Pet Portrait is that look with the proof included, and the other six styles are the reasons to look at anything else.

Common questions

Which West & Willow alternatives include a free proof?

Togo & Stark includes a free digital proof with unlimited revisions on every order and prints nothing until you approve it. Crown & Paw includes a free preview that auto-approves after three days. PortraitFlip and Paint Your Life show you the painting before final payment or shipping.

Is there a cheaper alternative to West & Willow?

For a framed 8x10, Togo & Stark matches the $77 entry price with the proof and the frame colour choice included. For the lowest entry price of all, Crown & Paw's canvases start at $39.95, unframed.

Are any of these hand-painted?

PortraitFlip and Paint Your Life ship physical paintings made by hand. West & Willow, Crown & Paw and Togo & Stark deliver digitally created artwork as premium prints; each describes its own process differently, quoted above in their own words.
