Best Custom Pet Portrait Companies, Compared
By John Baptista · September 1, 2026
The custom pet portrait market splits into three camps: digital illustration brands that print and frame (West & Willow, Crown & Paw, and us, Togo & Stark), hand-painted studios that ship a physical painting (Paint Your Life), and a growing crowd of app-style generators. This guide compares the established names on the things that actually differ: how the art is made, whether you see it before it prints, price, and speed. All claims come from each company's own published pages.

West & Willow
The best-known name in modern pet portraits. Their pages describe portraits "hand-illustrated by our talented digital artists" with no filters or apps, in five named styles plus themed lines, and the product range runs from framed prints to mugs, apparel and jewelry. A one-pet portrait is $46 as an 8x10 print and $77 framed in black or white, with walnut and birch frames costing more. The important fine print is the proof: their FAQ says they do not offer artwork previews or proofs, and seeing your portrait before it prints is a $10 "Artwork Preview" add-on with unlimited edit requests. Choose them if you want the most established brand and are comfortable trusting the artwork sight unseen, or happy paying to preview it.
Crown & Paw
The volume player, known for its Renaissance and costume canvases. Their pages say portraits are "handmade by real artists" using photo editing, retouching and blending over your photo, and the catalogue is enormous: canvases from $39.95, dozens of themed characters, one to four pets per artwork, plus apparel and gifts. Every order includes a free proof with unlimited edits, with one catch worth knowing: if you do not respond within three days, the artwork is treated as approved and printed. Choose them if you want a costume or Renaissance theme at the lowest price and a fast turnaround, and you will be quick with your proof reply.
Paint Your Life
A different product entirely: a physical painting, made by hand in oil, acrylic, watercolor, charcoal or pencil, from any photo. You approve a mock-up, then approve the finished painting itself before it ships, and their published timelines run from roughly two weeks fully expedited to three or four weeks normally, at prices that start in the hundreds of dollars for a small canvas. Choose them if what you want is a real painting: brushstrokes on canvas, at painting prices and painting timescales. No print brand, ours included, is a substitute for that.
Togo & Stark, and where we fit
We make framed pet portraits in seven signature styles, from minimal line art to a painted portrait to costumed personas. The artwork is created digitally in our signature styles, and a real person reviews every portrait before you see it. The thing we refuse to compromise on is the proof: every order includes a free digital proof with unlimited revisions, and nothing prints until you approve it. There is no fee to see your portrait first and no fee to change it. An 8x10 framed portrait is $77, the same as West & Willow's entry frame; a print is $42 and the digital file is $28. Printing is museum-grade giclée on archival paper, framed in real wood, and made in a production network that usually prints your order in the country it ships to. Our how it works page walks through the whole process, and our guide to the seven styles describes each one and who it suits.

How to choose
Decide on the proof question first, because it is the one difference you cannot undo: with some brands the first time you see the artwork is when it arrives on your doorstep. Then decide what the wall needs. A hand-painted oil for a milestone gift points to Paint Your Life. A themed costume canvas at the lowest entry price points to Crown & Paw. A modern portrait for a design-led home comes down to style range and the proof policy, which is where we would make our case: compare our seven styles against any list in this guide with your own photo, since the proof costs nothing either way.
Common questions
Which pet portrait companies show you a proof before printing?
Crown & Paw and Togo & Stark include a free proof with every order. Paint Your Life includes mock-up and final-painting approval. West & Willow sells previews as a $10 add-on and otherwise prints without one.
What does a custom pet portrait cost?
Digital files start around $10 to $30, unframed prints and canvases around $40 to $70, framed portraits roughly $77 to $165 depending on size and frame, and hand-painted canvases run from the low hundreds upward. Prices here were checked against each company's pages when this guide was last updated.
Are these portraits hand-painted?
Only Paint Your Life's are paintings in the physical sense. West & Willow, Crown & Paw and Togo & Stark all deliver digitally created artwork as premium prints; each company describes its own creative process differently, quoted above in their own words.
